Fruit Gardens Established in Schools and Colleges

The KVK Ernakulam, in collaboration with Prof. K.V. Thomas Vidyadhanam Trust, organized a fruit tree distribution program for 20 selected schools and colleges in Ernakulam District. The event was held at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, on 30th September 2024.

Honorable Minister for Agriculture, Shri P. Prasad, inaugurated the program and emphasized the importance of incorporating local fruits into daily diets for better health. He also planted the first tree as part of the project at Sacred Heart College, Thevara. Prof. K.V. Thomas, Chairman of Vidyadhanam Trust, welcomed the gathering, and the event was presided over by Shri T.J. Vinod, MLA, Ernakulam. Dr. Shinoj Subramannian, Principal Scientist & Head, ICAR-KVK Ernakulam, CMFRI, provided an overview of the project.

During the event, the Karshaka Mithra award was presented to Shri P.M. Subair, a teacher at Santa Cruz L.P. School, Fort Kochi, for his exceptional efforts in coordinating ecological clubs across schools in the district. Other dignitaries who addressed the audience included Smt. Honey G. Alexander, Deputy Director of Education, and Smt. Indu R. Nair, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Ernakulam.

Rev. Fr. Varghese Kachappilly, Manager, and Dr. Biju C.S., Principal of Sacred Heart College, highlighted the environmental benefits of tree planting, such as reducing carbon emissions and providing fruits, shade, and a favorable microclimate within campus spaces.

Each of the 20 participating institutions received 10 fruit trees—Mango, Jackfruit, Lime, Guava, and Neem (two of each)—along with manures, liming materials, tree guards, and maintenance guidelines to support the establishment of fruit gardens on their campuses.
