As part of its ongoing partnership with service cooperative banks in Ernakulam district, ICAR-KVK Ernakulam has extended technical guidance to the Korampadam Service Cooperative Bank to revive and promote scientific cage fish farming practices in Kadamakudy and Varapuzha. This initiative plays a crucial role in supporting farmers who suffered ₹6 crore in losses due to the massive fish kill during the May 2024 summer rains in the Periyar backwaters.
On November 25, 2024, the Bank distributed 50,000 fish seeds to 100 affected farmers as part of the recovery efforts. ICAR-KVK Ernakulam provided continuous technical support, with Dr. P.A. Vikas, SMS Fisheries, offering expert guidance on scientific measures to prevent future fish kills and ensure sustainable aquaculture practices.
The initiative was inaugurated by Kadamakudy Panchayath President Mary Vincent, who officially handed over the fish seeds to the farmers. This collaboration underscores ICAR-KVK Ernakulam’s commitment to fostering sustainable farming systems and strengthening the resilience of local aquaculture through strategic partnerships with cooperative banks across the district.
